Germany is sticking to story: we did not assist US
It's a bit late in the weekend, but Germany's Defense Minister, Peter Struck, is now saying that BRD agents have not helped the US in the War in Iraq, that they have not provided new or helpful information to American troops, who would then use that information for a targeted attack -- for example, the latest in Pakistan. It's a sticky situation, being pressed to reveal your country's intelligence role in a coalition[-like] effort. You end up having to say things like this:
"I'm sure the Americans knew themselves what targets they wanted to attack... They didn't need any directions. Apart from the fact that we granted the Americans flyover rights and that German soldiers guarded US facilities (in Germany), the government maintained its line that we did not take an active part in this war."
and then
"If we were able to prevent an embassy or a hospital from being hit, then that has nothing to do with double standards."
So, who did what now? Providing military intelligence is an active role, and the further we want to go down the rabbit hole, the more we're going to see how complicit our European allies have been with us in our unending quest for Iraqi freedom.
