Germans dominate the snow sports

Oh sure, there are a lot of finals left, you'd argue. But the Winter Olympics are basically over, and the Germans have the skills to pay the bills. Literally. The so-called "skill sports," such as luge and bobsledding, are a form of focused monomania, as athletes use fine control and breakneck speed to shave hundredths of a second off their time. Is it any wonder the Germans and Austrians are netting gold after gold here? And the richest-for-most-populous Olympic target, the United States, is doing okay, but not for expectations.

Well, let's seriously ask the question: why are the Germans such snow lords (and, even moreoso, mistresses)?

Well, Bavarians practically invented, or at least perfected, luging... and our demi-conservative friends at the Washington Post further theorize:

"Excellence in designing and engineering is another factor and so are the organizing skills and the infrastructure provided by the military -- all the leading German luge competitors are soldiers by profession."

Whatever. I'm so not into the Winter Games this year. Ah well, there'll be another one before we can get rid of Bush. And what's with the medals looking like the Japanese money?
