An Augenblickkritik

Go For Zucker is Jewish and German, and that's all you need to know

The first German-Jewish comedy since, like, ever has the unfortunate distinction of being not that funny. But that's only in translation: it's done very well here, in fact, it swept six categories at the German Film Prize. And it's still getting a lot of pity reviews in America nonetheless.

Go For Zucker is a platform for discussion rather than a movie -- as a political statement, it's shameful but past due. The film is a predictable sitcom with predictable stops and a tepid entry-point for Judaism. Even so, screening the German/Jew interplay with East/West Germany interplay lightens the load. Unfortunately all of the drink tickets I used for Goodbye, Lenin! means I don't have any left for Go For Zucker. For a follow-up German/Jewish joint: maybe a Hebrew Hammer-like premise can pick up the spare?
