Questions, Questions And Two Rants – The Weekly Sports Report
Michael Ballack is excited about joining Chelsea, everyone says. And well he might be, what with earning 120,000 squid a week. Apparently he likes the English style of pay. Oh Freud, you’re turning me into a Sun columnist. A kind of whimsical one. What is it with British tabloids and puns? No other country in the world produces tabloids obsessed with puns. Or am I wrong? Perhaps some Anglofritzer can inform us about the proclivities of the yellow press on other shores. Why puns anyway? Why don’t the headlines rhyme, or alliterate?
Germany beat the USA at football the other day. German football is the best in the world, because it's all about playing the averages. It's just efficiency and doing only what you know you can. It’s how sport should be played – with neither romance or imagination, and definitely not passion. Why do people go on about playing sport with “passion?” If you want passion have a love affair with a nun or something. There’s no passion in sport. Being good at sport is like having an artificial imagination. It makes stories in your head for you. Sport is something to keep boring people and children busy.
