Soccer Suxxxxx

Will America get on the global soccer starboard?

I've noticed Americans don't like our World Cup posts. Man, way symptomatic, guys. Although Contiguglia claims soccer has some share, I really wonder how interested the average American is in watching the games, even if our boys make the championship.

Soccer just does not really reside in the American sports heritage. Maybe it's our way of being different, maybe there's deeper reasons, but it's kind of baffling considering -- well, considering every other country in the world. Well, come to think of it: I grew up in a soccer town, and I've grown to think there is a bizarre affiliation of soccer with the upper class. It's up there with tennis, lacrosse and polo. How a game that could be played with an initial combined investment of about $5 (and four shoes for goals) is for the rich is beyond me, but whatever, it's true.

Also, it's not the exciting war of attrition that football and basketball are (even basketball is a bit slow: I think Americans like that the scores are so high. It's like watching a montage in a movie where the characters are successful and the money is rolling in), but it's still better than baseball, right? But at least in soccer the players aren't fat-optional.

Everyone, first of all, tells us we should have beaten Germany (in the '02 World Cup quarterfinals) and from (FIFA President) Sepp Blatter on down that we were a better team that day. And number two, they all expressed great respect for the American game. But then they all still comment on where we need to improve and that's the technical side.

No, and yes. Well, what do you think, Deutsche? Think you've got what it takes to beat America???

We'll show Contiguglia what's the difference between Ulsan (2002) and Dortmund.

I think there would be one or two tough seconds,
but in the end we would win 11:1!

Hah Amis und Fußball, ich lach mich schlapp!
