Dead, Dead, Dead!
Latin boom among German Überstreber
Suitable that Deutsche Welle would report on a dead language. I heard they have a hot scoop on who won the Franco-Prussian War, too.
I read this article and have no idea as to why Latin has waxed popular, so I'll venture forth a few guesses. An ex-girlfriend communicated with an Italian beau in Latin, because it was the only language they shared. Is that it? Is it the secret code language of Europe? For nerds because it's a little arder-hay than pig Latin, which means they can converse without being antagonized?
Or maybe it's because Germans are good with rules and declension, which Latin has in spades. Or maybe it's so they can read the Latin-edition Max et Moritz. Or is the pressure off because your teacher could have weak pronunciation and Marcus Aurelius is too far from his praetorian to protest? Whatevs. Max Fisher saved Latin too, but that was for Miss Cross. Why should I?
