Deutscher, Please

No immigration system works -- not even Germany's

Revelations: guest worker status is not green card status. Europe is not America. Current immigration policy is not past immigration policy.

Been to London lately? Immigration once worked in selected European states the way it does in America now: a tapestry of legals and illegals who've come in during critical periods. The difference is, over time, the percentages get critical too, and then Europeans choke the flow doen as the little countries full up. America is huge and built out of immigrants: what's another ethnic neighborhood? Let's extend the suburbs another ring -- the great colonial tree is getting older.

But there will be a point where immigration will get out of control (European-style, I mean) in America, and they will have to more or less reverse immigration policy, to the shock and indignation of all. You could expect race or class riots, violence, segregation -- well, increased segregation. No country can make the rules it wants to make -- basically, give us your rich, your service strata, and your self-employed masses. Eventually, these countries will be able to pursue a nakedly business-driven immigration policy, but in the meantime, viva la France!
