So Things Have Been A Little Rough Lately

You hate us! You really hate us!
Young people have the most hatred for America today. And even though the overwhelming majority of Americans despise the Bush Administration, loathe Congress and are as dubious of the Iraq occupation as Europeans are, it is the American citizen who has suffered most from the decline of U.S. popularity.
"Majorities around the world think Americans are greedy, violent and rude, and fewer than half in countries like Poland, Spain, Canada, China and Russia think Americans are honest," Newhouse News Service reports today.
It's times like this when only an Indian man can comfort me.

That Indian guy is hilarious - a great mix of simple high-pressure lying and total ignorance about the state of the world. Notice how he seriously considers Islamism an alternative - that's an indicator to his own radicalism. What a jerk.

This guy cracks me up.
"America has the kindest, gentlest foreign policy of any great power in world history"
You bet.

I would agree on a lot of points with the guy, especially the part that various religious groups can live peacefully together in the U.S. which is a wonderful thing. Also the part on immigration is absolutely right, America is the country where immigration works best because everyone is an immigrant.
On foreign policies, a lot of things are true as well but I think to say that the US went to Iraq with no self-interest is a really strange view.
And I don't like the "Despite its flaws, ... , American life as it is lived today is the best life that our world has to offer". "Best life" - what does that mean? That's not a worthy bottom line for such an interesting piece.

As for "America has the kindest, gentlest foreign policy of any great power in world history," I had thought of US foreign policy as having a bloody history -- until I read this article and thought about it.
Yes, the US has been kinder and gentler. There's no excuse for innocent lives lost in places like Iraq or Vietnam. But, think of the comparisons: Germany? Turkey? Russia? China? Japan? My God, each of those countries (not one, but EACH!) saw regimes in the 20th Century that wiped out millions, even tens of millions.
