Fair Weather Freunds

Germans object to treatment of Al-Masri

It's been really rough, the Iraq war not working out. It doesn't help that absolutely no one in the world, Americans included, can come up with one solid reason why 175,000 armed 19-year-olds are regulating in a nation that didn't want them. WMDs? Oil? The inhuman regime of our friend Saddam Hussein (deceased)? It's a big snafu and no one wants to get involved in it. Except, except -- Germany, along with our other recently EU friends, have been complicit all along. But now they're ready for a firm message:

German arrest warrants are not valid in the US but if the suspects were to travel to the European Union they could be arrested.

Awesome! So, if and when these secret torture agents friends of yours come to, I dunno, France, you guys are going to be there to nail them. But, in the meantime, where were you when America was meting out its rights and wrongs? That's right, you were making sure the steps were working while your citizens were being ushered up into it. Now you care about what happened to Mr. Ponytail, now you realize he was the wrong guy? That's just turning on your pal when his little expedition didn't work out -- which it totally didn't, but seriously. You gave him to us. What's the matter, we treated him wrong? Was that out of your hands? He was your citizen. What could we do to him that you didn't let us do?

The extradition flights are inhuman and terrible, no one would deny that: Germany should shut up about them, though. It just doesn't look good. You thought it was okay when it happened, gang! It's a little too late to wash your hands now. We're all in this sludge together.

Yes, there is hypocrisy.

"Germany should shut up about them, though."

How should "Germany" do that?
Who is "Germany"? Do you mean the Merkel-Müntefering government?
Well, the German judiciary is independent from the executive government and the parliament.

"You gave him to us."

What?

Anyway, I linked to you

Surely you jest.

"Surely you jest."

I don't know if Anglofritz is joking.

I am terrible with understanding humor. Too bloody German, I guess.

Besides, I am reading so much weird stuff in the blogosphere. Anything is possible.

I think, someone called post-modernism the death of irony...
