Get Your Lamp and T-Shirts

Selling wearable cotton is a formidable business in Germany, with €58 billion sold in 2007, although the numbers don’t stack up much when compared to 1989. Times are changing. The economy is solid and consumers are shop happy. Urban Outfitters wants part of the cake and plans to launch their first store in Hamburg.

US retail chains have had mixed success in Germany. The most prominent pullback has been Gap. They couldn’t compete with H&M and lacked a unique position in the textile landscape, and too expensive. Yet the Philly based Outfitters, founded as “The Free People’s Store,” a willfull play with wisdom for sale à la Carpe Diem, might have a good shot. Now on the stock market, the store inventory is fairly cheap and radiates lamps aside internet cool books. Other retailers, such as American Apparel who promote their non-sweatshop production and gots good ‘ol t-shirts have another proposition,

What? For a pile of Fruit-of-the-Loom seventies style t-shirts? For 15 and 20 euros? Are you kidding me?
